Deliberate Practice and Its Limits
Ericsson’s deliberate-practice research, the meta-analysis that bounded it, and how to design practice that actually moves a learner.

“Ten thousand hours” became a slogan for the idea that practice makes anyone expert. The research behind the slogan — and the research that later complicated it — together tell a more useful story for anyone developing young talent.
The original finding
Ericsson, Krampe and Tesch-Römer (1993) studied elite musicians and found that the best had accumulated vastly more deliberate practice: effortful, goal-directed work on specific weaknesses, with feedback, at the edge of current ability. The adjective was the point. Mere repetition — playing pieces you already play well — barely counts. Deliberate practice is uncomfortable, designed and reviewed.
The correction
Macnamara, Hambrick and Oswald (2014) meta-analysed practice research across music, games, sport and education and found deliberate practice explains a real but decidedly partial share of performance differences — substantial in stable, rule-rich domains like chess and music, far less in education broadly. People differ in starting points and in how much they gain per hour of practice; practice is necessary for expertise, not sufficient, and not equalising. That is not a reason for pessimism — it is a reason for personalisation.
What this means for developing talent
Three implications follow. First, design practice properly: a learner working on the specific thing they cannot yet do, with feedback and a target, gains more in thirty minutes than in two hours of comfortable repetition. Second, expect different learners to need different amounts and kinds of practice for the same gain — which is an argument for the individual review cycle, not for uniform homework volume. Third, protect the deliberateness: for able learners especially, practice degrades into performance of things already mastered unless someone keeps moving the edge outward.
The practical test
Ask of any practice regime: what specific weakness is this targeting, how will the learner know it is improving, and when will we review? If those questions have no answers, it is repetition wearing practice’s clothes.
