High-Challenge Teaching in the Everyday Classroom
Practical, research-backed ways to stretch able learners inside an ordinary lesson: depth over volume, desirable difficulties and the challenge–skill balance.

High challenge is not a bolt-on for a selected few; it is a property of good teaching that the most able learners simply cannot do without. The question for a busy classroom is practical: how do you provide genuine stretch without building a parallel curriculum? The research points to a handful of moves that repay the effort.
Teach into the zone of proximal development
Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development — the space between what a learner can do alone and what they can do with support — remains the most useful single idea in challenge planning. For high-attaining pupils the zone sits further out than the standard lesson reaches, so the task is to move the ceiling, not the floor: extension through depth and complexity rather than simply more of the same. Tomlinson’s work on differentiation frames this as adjusting content, process and product to readiness — with readiness assessed from evidence, not assumption.
Prefer depth and complexity to volume
Curriculum research in high-ability education — VanTassel-Baska’s Integrated Curriculum Model most prominently — argues for advanced content, higher-order processes and genuine products rather than extra worksheets. In practice: fewer questions with richer structure; problems that require justification, not just answers; sources that disagree with each other; tasks with more than one respectable solution path. A “low floor, high ceiling” task lets the whole class enter while leaving room for the strongest thinkers to climb.
Use difficulty deliberately
Robert Bjork’s programme of research on “desirable difficulties” shows that conditions which slow visible progress — spacing practice out, interleaving topics, retrieving from memory rather than re-reading — often produce more durable learning. Roediger and Karpicke’s testing-effect experiments (2006) found retrieval practice substantially strengthened retention compared with repeated study. For able learners who cruise, deliberately introducing these difficulties converts easy success into real growth.
Mind the challenge–skill balance
Csikszentmihalyi’s studies of flow describe deep engagement arriving when challenge slightly exceeds current skill — too little and boredom follows; too much and anxiety takes over. The practical discipline is review: watch the evidence, and adjust the stretch as the learner grows. Challenge is a moving target, which is why our framework ties provision to a regular review cycle rather than a one-off plan.
Keep the door open
Finally, high challenge should be offered generously. Readiness is domain-specific and it changes; the pupil who declines the harder task in September may seize it in March. Planning challenge for whoever is ready — rather than reserving it for a fixed list — costs little and regularly surprises schools with who steps up.
