Learning Styles: What the Evidence Actually Supports

The learning-styles hypothesis lacks credible support — Pashler and colleagues showed why. What works instead: dual coding, retrieval practice and spacing.

Few ideas in education are as widely believed, and as thoroughly unsupported, as the claim that teaching improves when it is matched to each pupil’s “learning style”. It feels intuitive, it flatters our sense that children are individuals, and it is very likely wrong — in a specific, well-documented way that matters for how schools spend their effort.

What the evidence actually shows

In 2008 the Association for Psychological Science commissioned four senior researchers — Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer and Bjork — to review the evidence for learning styles. Their conclusion was unusually blunt for an academic review: to justify style-matching you need studies where learners of different styles are randomly assigned to different methods, and the “matched” groups do better. Studies of that design were vanishingly rare, and the credible ones tended to find no matching benefit. Preferences certainly exist — children do favour ways of working — but preference is not the same as benefit, and teaching to the preference has not been shown to improve learning.

Why the myth persists

The idea survives partly because it contains a grain of truth: learners really do differ — in prior knowledge, ability profile, interest and confidence — and good teachers really do adapt. The error is the mechanism. What the evidence supports is adapting to what a learner knows and can do, not to a fixed sensory category. Willingham’s summary is useful: children are more alike than different in how they learn, and the differences that matter most are knowledge and skill, which teaching can change.

What to do instead

The same cognitive science that undermines style-matching offers better-supported tools. Combining words with relevant images — dual coding, grounded in Paivio’s work and Mayer’s multimedia research — helps most learners, not one “visual” subgroup. Retrieval practice (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006) and spaced review (Cepeda et al., 2006) strengthen retention for everyone. Worked examples ease early learning of complex material (Sweller’s cognitive load research), then fade as expertise grows. None of these requires sorting children into types; all of them repay consistent use.

How this shapes our practice

At Lighthouse Academy, adaptation is ability-informed, never style-based: a learner’s strengths are an on-ramp into demanding material, weaker channels are supported rather than avoided, and every learner gets rich, multi-modal teaching. We wrote that rule into our own adaptive-content policy precisely because the evidence is clear — and because a child told they are a “visual learner” has been handed a limit, not a gift.
