Questions That Stretch Thinking

Self-explanation is one of the most robust effects in learning research — and justification questions are the cheapest stretch a classroom has.

Ask a class “does everyone understand?” and you learn nothing. Ask one learner “why does that step work?” and you learn everything — and so, remarkably, do they. The research on questioning and self-explanation shows that the questions asked in a classroom are not merely checks on learning; they are one of its engines.

The self-explanation effect

Chi and colleagues (1994) had students study science texts while explaining each step to themselves, and found the self-explainers dramatically out-learned controls — not because they knew more going in, but because generating explanations forces the mind to connect new material to old, expose gaps, and repair them in real time. The effect is among the most robust in learning research, and it is doubly relevant for able learners, who can often produce correct answers without ever being made to articulate why.

Questions that stretch

The practical craft is moving a share of classroom questions up the ladder: from recall (“what is the answer?”) to justification (“why must that be true?”), comparison (“how does this differ from yesterday’s case?”), boundary-testing (“when would this fail?”) and transfer (“where else would this reasoning work?”). Dylan Wiliam’s formative-assessment work adds the structural conditions: questions worth asking deserve thinking time, all-student response rather than volunteer culture, and answers used to adjust the teaching — a question whose answer changes nothing was decoration.

For the strongest thinkers especially

High-attaining learners are the most likely to coast on fluent answers — and justification questions are the cheapest form of stretch a classroom possesses: no new resources, no separate worksheet, simply a harder cognitive demand on the same content. “Convince me.” “Prove it can’t be otherwise.” “Find the case that breaks it.” A learner who regularly meets these is doing advanced work inside an ordinary lesson.
