SMPY: Fifty Years of Following Exceptional Ability

The Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth shows early ability predicts accomplishment — and that challenge, not identification alone, is the active ingredient.

Since the early 1970s, the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth has followed cohorts of adolescents identified by talent search — teenagers who reasoned, at twelve or thirteen, like able university applicants. Fifty years on, SMPY is the richest record we have of what becomes of exceptional early ability, and its findings are bracing in both directions.

What half a century shows

Lubinski and Benbow’s 35-year synthesis (2006) and later follow-ups document remarkable adult outcomes: doctorates, patents, professorships, publications and leadership at rates many multiples of the population baseline. Early ability, measured well, predicts real accomplishment at scale. Two refinements matter as much as the headline. First, the pattern of abilities shaped the field: mathematical tilt led towards STEM, verbal tilt towards humanities and law — profiles, not a single rank, forecast direction (Kell, Lubinski & Benbow, 2013). Second, even within this exceptional group, more ability predicted more accomplishment — there was no ceiling beyond which differences stopped mattering.

The uncomfortable finding

SMPY also measured what happened to development when nothing was done. Participants who received appropriately challenging opportunities — acceleration, mentorship, advanced coursework — significantly out-accomplished equally able peers who did not. Ability located and then left in an unmodified classroom produced systematically less. The study is therefore not a monument to talent; it is a controlled demonstration that talent development is the active ingredient.

Reading it honestly

SMPY studied one kind of ability, found by one kind of search, in one country — it licenses no complacency about the children such searches miss, which is why identification breadth remains a separate battle. But its core lesson travels: find ability early, read the profile rather than the rank, and meet it with real challenge — or watch a measurable share of it quietly fail to happen.
