What Terman Got Right — and Wrong

A century of following high-IQ children: ability bought entry, development decided outcomes — and the two rejected boys who won Nobel Prizes.

In 1921 Lewis Terman began following more than 1,500 high-IQ Californian children through their lives — the first great longitudinal study of ability, and still one of the most instructive, partly for what it got wrong.

What Terman found

Against the era’s stereotype of the sickly bookworm, Terman’s participants were on the whole healthy, socially capable and professionally successful — a corrective that shaped a century of advocacy. But the study’s most quoted lesson came from within the group: the highest and least accomplished quartiles of his sample barely differed in measured intelligence. They differed in persistence, confidence, opportunity and support. Ability had bought entry to the study; it did not by itself buy outcomes.

What Terman missed

The study’s failures are as instructive. Selection leaned on teacher nomination, importing the visibility biases teachers carry — and famously, at least two children rejected from the sample (William Shockley and Luis Alvarez) went on to win Nobel Prizes while none of the selected “Termites” did. A single IQ threshold, applied once in childhood, missed late developers, undervalued domain-specific brilliance, and reflected the demographics of who got noticed in 1920s California. The lesson is not that measurement is worthless; it is that one measurement, taken once, treated as destiny, is indefensible.

The modern successor

The Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth, following talent-searched adolescents for five decades (Lubinski & Benbow, 2006), corrected much of the method: domain-specific measures, repeated assessment, attention to opportunity. Its findings — extraordinary accomplishment concentrated among those whose abilities were identified early and met with challenge — complete Terman’s half-lesson: potential is real, development decides.

What a school should take from a century of following the able

Identify with more than one instrument, more than once. Expect late arrivals. Treat any starting picture as a hypothesis. And put the developmental machinery — challenge, goals, review — where the old model put the label, because the longitudinal record is unanimous about which one predicts the life.
